Green building and development is the process by which architects, engineers, land and building owners, contractors and manufacturers design and construct high performance buildings that minimize their impact on the environment while providing benefits to the economy, community, and building occupants. There are several components to green building such as increased energy efficiency, improved indoor air quality, improved occupant health, safety, and productivity, and reduced stormwater runoff, carbon emissions, water usage, and solid waste. All of these components contribute to a higher market value for green buildings as compared to conventional buildings and this has resulted in a significant increase in the number of green buildings over the last decade.
The City of Indianapolis is committed to increasing the number of green buildings in both the public and private sector. Led by the Office of Sustainability, the City is developing policies, programs, and initiatives to promote green building practices, remove barriers, and engage its citizens in improving their built environment.
